As we are all aware, petty crime is on the up in certain areas of the UK. Unfortunately, this isn’t just street crime your home is at risk as well. Take a moment to think about the items you have in your home that are often on show. Electrical items such as televisions, games machines and even your home computer are often left in places that can easily be spotted by a thief just looking through the window.

Of course, you can take certain precautions by hiding smaller things like laptops or games machines away when you’re not at home, but this can become pretty tiresome. You may also have a collection of silver, or other valuables that simply cannot be put away every-time you leave the house. For this reason, many people will opt for a security system and this will include cameras.

Where to Place Cameras

You will need to decide where to place your cameras. There is no strict rule about where to put them because every house is different. What will help is if you can think like a thief. Take a good look around your home and consider which areas are most at risk. A criminal will need easy access in and out, and quickly! So, take a close look at your doors and windows. It’s likely this will be the most obvious place a burglar will try to gain access.

Of course, you won’t want a whole array of cameras placed in all sorts of places that would just cost you more money. However, a few well placed cameras that will give you views over your doors and windows are probably the best place to start. You should also think about access to the top floor of your home. Perhaps you have a flat roofed garage? Is it easy to climb up? Are there windows nearby? If so, consider placing a camera in this area too. The trick is to cover as many places as possible.

Other Areas to Consider

Think about your garden and drive. A thief doesn’t just magically appear they will need to enter these parts of your home in order to get through a door or window. Consider having cameras installed so you get a view across your garden and up your driveway. If it’s obvious a camera is in this part of your home, it’s likely the burglar won’t even bother attempting to get close to your house.

A Cheaper Option

Whilst live cameras will be hooked up to a main unit that records everything, you do have a cheaper option in the form of dummy cameras. These look just like real cameras and are a fantastic alternative to live. If you’re a little unsure about this, remember it’s only you that knows dummy cameras are not recording anything. They will act as a deterrent to would-be thieves. Undesirables like this are looking for a quick way in and out of your home. If they think they might be caught on camera, they will move on to some other poor unsuspecting victim.
