School Security Measures that You Can Use in Your Home

School administrators are required to pay close attention to security and adhere to procedures that can also be carried out in your home.

Part of a school administrator’s job is to ensure that schools are a safe place for students and faculty to work and play. This means that schools use many safety measures to enhance security and protect students from crime and accidents. However, these security measures aren’t just suitable for scholastic security. When you are securing your home, you can borrow some ideas from your local schools to increase security for you and your family. There a few key security techniques that are part of daily life in a school but they can be incredibly helpful on your home as well, especially if you have kids. Here are some safety features that can be helpful in your home:
  • Keep fire extinguishers on hand at all times. It is important to keep fire extinguishers ready in schools but it is also a good idea for your home.
  • Pools are a dangerous place for children if they aren’t properly supervised. A poolside convex mirror is a good way to increase security.
  • Schools spend a considerable amount of time preparing for the possibility of a fire. Make sure you have a plan to protect your home.

Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher should be available at all times in a school. You may have seen them in chemistry labs or in other classrooms that deal with special assignments like cooking or mechanical work. If there is a small fire, an extinguisher needs to be nearby so it can be put out before there is a more serious problem. However, the same accidents that can occur in a school may also happen in your home. You should keep at least one or two fire extinguishers in your home so you can stop small fires before they spread, especially in the kitchen and the garage.

Poolside Convex Mirror

Pools are a place people of all ages can have fun, get some exercise and maybe even a little sun. However, with slippery concrete and a sizable body of water it can also be a dangerous place for children if they are left unsupervised. If you have been around a school swimming pool you may have seen wide angle convex mirrors up on a pole or on the side of a building. These are poolside convex security mirrors, and are used to increase visibility for adults who are watching over pool areas. This idea can also be used in the home. A convex mirror has a wide angle of view and can help you see into blind spots. If your kids are playing around the pool area, a mirror will give you that much more visibility when supervising them.

Fire Alarms

Again, fire safety is a top priority in a school and that can’t be seen any clearer than with a school’s frequent fire drills. Many former students can probably remember walking through the halls protecting their eardrums from blaring alarms. While loud and possibly annoying, fire alarms are an essential component of fire safety. Just like in schools, smoke detectors and fire alarms in the home should be checked regularly to ensure that they are working correctly. It can also be good to teach your children what to do if there is a fire in your home. Even as adults we can learn one more lesson from schools by borrowing some of their safety techniques to use in our homes. Pay close attention to other methods that may help you avoid accidents around the house.
