There are plenty reasons that you might need to hide or secure your valuables. Maybe you are a lawyer keeping important documents hidden away from curious eyes. Maybe you’re leaving for holiday and you’d like to hide something from possible nosey housekeepers.

Perhaps you are just looking for a way to covertly conceal your prized possessions while you are away. Of course, the best way to keep your treasures secure in the long term is in a sturdy safe. Even if a burglar finds it, he will most likely not be able to get in. However, if you would also like the added security of an inconspicuous hiding spot there are several places in every home that may work.

Where Do Thieves Look for Valuables?

As you are surveying your home for the ideal hiding spot, it is good to know how a robber usually operates. First, a robber’s goal is to quietly get in, take as much as they can and get out. In fact, most robberies last about 10 minutes but the more criminal companions a robber has with him, the more they can steal in that time. Their first stop is often the master bedroom. In there they will look for cash, jewellery and any other obvious valuables they can find. They know to look under mattresses and in sock drawers, so these are ill-advised hiding spots. After the master bedroom, they will head to the medicine cabinet. A skilled thief can recognise which prescriptions will turn an easy profit. Next they will look for electronics that are light and easy to carry in places like the living room, media rooms or a home office. Along the way they might look in the classic hiding places like behind picture frames, under beads, toilet tanks and even in the fridge.

Great Short Term Hiding Spots

When you are looking for a simple place to hide some valuables for a few days there are still some places in your house where a thief or a prying house sitter may neglect to look.
  • Fake utility installations like an air vent or a phoney electrical box.
  • Buried in a fake plant (or a real plant if you don’t mind getting your hands and your valuable dirty)
  • Within a framed picture, instead of behind one. This is a great place for documents. Just make sure they are taped down. If a criminal hears something sliding around when checking behind, he may investigate further.
  • Wrapped up and frozen in your freezer. While a burglar might take a look in the fridge, he will probably not spend time looking through everything inside.
Where to Put Hidden Safes If a thief happens to run across any of your hiding spots there is no second line of defence. A hidden wall or floor safe is the best of both worlds. However, where can you put a hidden safe so that it stays hidden? Well, it is best to avoid obvious places like the master bedroom or a home office. Laundry rooms, hallways and bathrooms are a good inconspicuous location to install a hidden safe. However, the room that criminals tend to avoid the most is a child’s bed or playroom. Children’s rooms aren’t typically associated with valuables and they are often cluttered with toys and games. A teen’s room may be targeted for gaming systems and other electronics but a young child’s room is typically not at a target.
